Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Njau.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Turning Vision into Reality: My Sewing Business Journey
Frustration can be a powerful motivator. For me, it was the struggle to find materials and designs that matched my vision for my home and wardrobe. Nothing in stores ever felt quite right. So, I took matters into my own hands, creating custom pieces that truly reflected my style. The compliments I received, especially from friends and strangers in the US, were overwhelming.
Encouraged by the admiration and endless requests for custom clothes, handbags, and decorative pillow covers, I decided to turn my passion into a business. In February 2023, I launched my sewing business, starting with cloth repairs and customization. It wasn’t easy—there were moments of doubt and hesitation—but my vision kept me going: to build a brand offering unique, customizable designs that fill the gaps in the market.
What began in my neighborhood quickly expanded, thanks to the power of online marketing. Today, I’m proud to have served clients in 26 states, offering products that range from custom hand and beach bags to decorative pillowcases. My fabrics come from local Nashville artists and some are imported from Africa, Europe, and Asia, allowing me to create one-of-a-kind pieces that resonate with clients of all ages and sizes.
This journey from Tanzania to the US, from inspiration to realization, has been nothing short of amazing. And as my business grows, so does my commitment to helping others find designs that truly speak to them. The best is yet to come.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and like any journey worth taking, it came with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was marketing—getting the word out about my business in a crowded marketplace wasn’t easy. With so many options available to consumers, standing out and capturing attention required a lot of creativity and persistence.
Lack of exposure was another significant challenge. When I first started, I didn’t have a large network or the benefit of a well-established brand. It took time to build awareness and trust, especially in a new country where I was still learning the ropes.
Cultural differences also played a role in the struggles I faced. Coming from Tanzania, I had to adapt to a different business environment and consumer preferences in the US. Understanding what resonates with customers here, while staying true to my roots, was a delicate balance to strike.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle taught me valuable lessons and pushed me to find innovative solutions. Through persistence and a willingness to learn, I was able to navigate these difficulties and grow my business into what it is today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m passionate about my work, and my business focuses on repairs, alterations, and customization. However, what truly defines my craft is my specialization in handmade beach totes and decorative pillow covers. These products are where my creativity shines the most, and they’ve become a signature offering that clients have come to love.
I’m known for my creativity, adaptability, and unique ability to visualize and bring to life ideas that others might overlook. Whether it’s a simple alteration or a completely custom design, I take pride in my ability to understand my clients’ visions and turn their dreams into reality.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how much I’ve learned and adapted since starting this journey. From website creation to marketing, I’ve gained invaluable knowledge that has helped me grow my business and connect with a wider audience. Each challenge has been a stepping stone, and I’m grateful for the opportunities to learn and evolve.
What sets me apart from others is my deep commitment to my clients. I don’t just see myself as a seamstress or designer; I see myself as a partner in bringing my clients’ visions to life. My ability to truly understand what they want and translate that into something beautiful and tangible is what makes my work special.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that might surprise those who know me or are familiar with my work is that I’m actually a certified laboratory technician by profession. Before diving into the world of sewing and fashion, my career was rooted in the sciences. It’s a bit of an unexpected twist, but I believe my background in laboratory work has given me a unique perspective and attention to detail that I bring into my sewing business. It’s a reminder that passions can take us in directions we might never have anticipated, and I’m grateful for the journey that’s led me here.
